Four Car Accident Injuries You Did Not Know You Had

shutterstock_1426522847

Sometimes, injuries after a car accident are obvious. Broken bones, deep lacerations, and facial injuries are just a few of these. However, there are other injuries that are not as easily recognizable. It is important to know what these overlooked injuries are, as you can still hold negligent parties liable for them.

Due to the fact that some injuries are hidden or overlooked after a crash, it is also essential that you seek medical attention after any accident. A doctor will perform a full examination and look for these injuries so you can receive treatment as soon as possible. The four most common hidden injuries to look for after a car accident are listed below.

Back and Neck Injuries

Any time two cars collide on the roads, the impact is enough to cause the body to violently jerk, which results in injuries to the neck and back. The force of the crash can result in damage to the vertebrae, discs, and ligaments in the spine. Whiplash is a neck injury that is extremely common in rear-end accidents. Whiplash is a result of the neck moving back and forth in rapid succession, which can cause damage to the soft tissues. Whiplash is just one type of back and neck injury that results in extreme pain for the victim and that can take months to recover from.

Traumatic Brain Injuries

Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are not only some of the most common that result from car accidents, they are also some of the most overlooked. Certain TBIs, such as concussions, do not present symptoms right away. It is often days, and sometimes even weeks later that a TBI will start to manifest.

Soft Tissue Injuries

Soft tissues in the body refer to the tendons, ligaments, and muscles, and these can easily become damaged during a car crash. Torn muscles and ligaments are very common when a person breaks a bone, as these soft tissues surround the bones. However, soft tissue injuries are also common when fractures are not present. Even though these injuries typically require extensive surgery and physical therapy, they are not always visible right away.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Car accidents are traumatic and it is natural for accident victims to feel stressed, upset, and confused immediately afterwards. However, the trauma does not always end when a victim leaves the accident scene. A study shows that more than 22 percent of car accident victims develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after a crash. This can result in nightmares, flashbacks, a withdrawal from activities the victim once loved, and other harmful effects.

It is impossible to identify PTSD immediately after an accident, but victims should watch for mood and behavioral changes in the weeks following a crash and seek help if they notice them.
