Six Things You Should Never Do After a Car Accident

After a car accident, it is important to take several steps to protect any future claim you may file. While certain steps are essential, there are also some actions that are just as crucial to avoid. Below are six things you should never do after a car accident.

Leave the Scene

Under Florida law, you are required to stop your vehicle at the scene of any accident that resulted in bodily injury or death. If you leave the scene, you may face hit-and-run charges, which could result in high fines and even prison time. Even in a minor accident, you should still remain at the scene. This will give you an opportunity to exchange information with the other drivers involved.

Fail to Report the Accident

In certain circumstances, such as if the accident involved serious bodily injury or death, Florida law also requires you to report the crash. Still, you should report even a minor accident to local law enforcement. The police will write and file an official report, which may help prove fault if you need to file a claim for damages against the at-fault party.

Admit Fault

It is natural to want to apologize after an accident. Saying you are sorry does not always mean that you are accepting fault, but that you simply regret that the accident happened at all. However, you should still never apologize after an accident. The insurance company will use your apology against you in an effort to reduce the amount of damages you receive.

Forget to Document the Scene

The first few moments after a crash are confusing and most accident victims are unsure of what to do. Some are so shocked that they simply drive away after they speak to the police. The accident scene holds important evidence that you may not be able to recover once you leave. Take pictures of your injuries, damage to any vehicles, obstructions on the road, weather conditions at the time of the crash, and any other relevant information.

Refuse Medical Treatment

If you need to file a claim for damages after the car accident, you will need to prove the extent of your injuries and the cost of your treatment. If you refuse medical treatment, you will not be able to provide this proof, which will have a very negative impact on any future claim you file. Even if you do not believe you were seriously injured in the accident, you should still see a doctor. Some injuries are not apparent right away and seeing a doctor will prevent them from becoming worse.
