The Five Most Common Distractions Behind the Wheel

Distracted driving is one of the most dangerous things a motorist can do behind the wheel. When most people think of driving while distracted, they often envision a driver that is using a handheld electronic device. Unfortunately,  this is just one type of distraction. There are many other distractions drivers face when they are on the road and the five most common of these are found below.

Texting

Texting while driving is known as a triple threat because it makes you become so distracted. When texting, you take your hands away from the wheel and your eyes from the road. You also concentrate more on the text that you are sending rather than the road in front of you. Texting and driving is against the law, so it is important to never do it, particularly when holding the device. Not only does this behavior come with steep penalties, but it can also cause a serious accident.

Using a Cell Phone

Texting while driving is not the only dangerous use of a cell phone while driving. Using a cell phone at all while driving is a distraction, and the average person will remain distracted for approximately 27 seconds even after using voice commands. When driving, it is always best to simply put your phone away and not use it until you are no longer driving.

Rubbernecking

Rubbernecking is very dangerous behavior and drivers that engage in it can also be considered negligent. Even when events are happening around you, or you pass an accident or something else noteworthy, it is crucial to stay focused on the road in front of you.

Passengers

Rowdy passengers can be a significant distraction to a driver. If you are having conversations with passengers in the vehicle and find that it causes you to become distracted, it is best to save the chat for later when you are not driving. Regardless of whether you are talking to passengers or not, it is important to never turn around to face other people in the car.

Daydreaming

It is easy to become distracted by your own thoughts while behind the wheel, particularly when you have been on the road for a long time. Sometimes it may be easier to bring your thoughts back to the road by having a cup of coffee. When it is not, it is always best to stop and take a break from driving for a short while.
